Ashok Sharma is a prominent figure in Nepalese cinema, known for his versatile career as an actor and film director. His impressive portfolio includes over 30 stage plays, more than three-dozen television serials, and a staggering number of more than a hundred films. Notably, he played lead roles in popular movies like "Pariwar" and "Naata." As of 2018, he had directed eight out of the eleven films he was involved in.
Sharma's journey in the entertainment industry began when he moved to Kathmandu in 2039 BS (equivalent to AD 1982–83). He initially found success on the stage before transitioning to television. His breakthrough came with his role as a politician's henchman in Krishna Malla's serial "Chakravyuha." Subsequently, he made memorable appearances in serials such as "Tadhako Basti" and "Raat." His venture into feature films included noteworthy titles like "Masaal" and "25 Basanta."
In 1994, Sharma took a significant step by producing the film "Truck Driver" with the support of friends, both in the cast and crew. The film not only recovered its production costs but also generated substantial profits. This success allowed him to clear his debts and finance future projects. Sharma continued his directorial journey with films like "Sita," "Garib," and "Nirmaya," though they achieved moderate success. His breakthrough came with "Allare," which not only performed exceptionally well in Nepal but also marked the first Nepali film to have an international release, catering to the Nepalese diaspora in Europe and North America. His filmography also includes notable works like "Yo Maya Ko Sagar," "Mitini," and "Andaaj." After a 12-year hiatus from filmmaking, Sharma returned to the director's chair with "Jai Bhole" in 2018, followed by "Rato Tika Nidharma" in 2019.
