He was born on October 2, 1942, in Kurule Tenupa, Dhankuta, Nepal, and later moved to Kalimpong, India, where he nurtured his love for music. Despite encountering financial difficulties and personal challenges, Bhakta Raj relentlessly pursued his dream of becoming a singer, ultimately returning to Nepal to establish himself as one of the most celebrated musical talents in the nation’s history.

His career soared in 1973 when he clinched a gold medal in the All Nepal Song Competition organized by Radio Nepal. Throughout his career, he recorded approximately 450 songs, including timeless hits like "Mutu Jali Rahechha," "Jati Chot Dinchhau," "Hajar Sapana Haru Ko," and "Jahan Chhan Buddha Ka Aankha." His emotive voice and heartfelt compositions garnered him immense admiration, especially for his devotional songs, which earned him the title of "Bhajan Shiromani."
