In a significant move for the Nepali film industry, Friends Cinema has officially expanded its reach to the eastern hills, opening its third branch in Ilam. Following its success in Dharan and Butwal, the new outlet located in Ilam Municipality-7 is set to begin regular film screenings this coming Friday.

This expansion is more than just a new business venture; it’s a strategic step toward decentralizing the movie-going experience in Nepal. Director Ashish H. Tamang believes that while big cities have plenty of theaters, the real growth of the domestic market lies in the districts. "If we want to expand the film market, we must create a professional environment for audiences in every district," Tamang stated.

At a Glance: Friends Cinema Ilam

Investment: Approximately 3.5 Crore NPR.

Capacity: A modern single screen with 190 seats.

Location: Ilam Municipality-7.

Opening Date: Formal screenings start this Friday (Phagun 8, 2082).

Approval: The Film Development Board has already granted the necessary operating license.

Strengthening the Domestic Market

The logic behind this move is simple: convenience. Currently, many movie lovers in hilly regions have to travel to major hubs like Birtamode or Dharan just to catch a new release on a decent screen. By bringing a high-quality theater to Ilam, Friends Cinema is betting on the untapped potential of local audiences.

Tamang suggests that opening such well-equipped, smaller-scale theaters at the district level could potentially double the domestic box office numbers. It provides a platform for local stories to reach their own people in a professional setting.

Actually, with the recent success of films like A Bata Aama and the buzz surrounding Laalibazaar, the timing couldn't be better. Providing a quality venue in Ilam ensures that these hits reach every corner of the country. At first, it might seem like a small addition, but for the residents of Ilam, it’s a major upgrade to their local entertainment scene. Or at least, it saves them a long bus ride to the plains just for a movie.
