As the release of Laalimaa approaches on Falgun 29, lead actress Roshni Karki has opened up about the intense preparation required to play the titular character. Roshni, who comes from a strong theater background, is portraying a sex worker for the first time, a role she took very seriously.

Because the world of sex work in Nepal is often shrouded in secrecy, Roshni found it challenging to find authentic references. "Nobody openly identifies as a sex worker; their profession is kept hidden," she explained. However, to truly capture the psyche of the character, she knew she had to speak with women who lived that reality.

Understanding the Psyche: The Preparation Process

Real-Life Meetings: With the help of the production team, Roshni met and interviewed 10 women currently involved in the profession.

Diverse Perspectives: The women she spoke with ranged from college-aged students to middle-aged women.

Common Thread: Roshni discovered that almost every woman she met entered the profession due to economic hardship. "They shared their pain, their struggles, and their mental state with me. It was crucial for me to understand their mentality to do justice to the role," she shared.

Focus on Mental Health: Rather than just focusing on the profession's exterior, the film and Roshni’s performance focus heavily on the internal psychological state of these women living in a Nepali social context.

Becoming a Voice for the Voiceless

Roshni feels a deep sense of responsibility in representing such a large, marginalized community. "As an artist, I have become their voice," she said. "I’ve tried my best to bring their mentalities and problems to the screen. It gives me great satisfaction to represent their hidden pain."

Actually, it’s quite rare for mainstream Nepali actresses to go through such a "method acting" process, especially for a stigmatized role. Roshni's theater roots clearly show in her dedication to the craft. Or at least, it suggests that Lalima will be much more than a surface-level drama—it aims to be a gritty, empathetic character study.
