Kathmandu — One of Bollywood's most legendary filmmakers is coming to Kathmandu. Ramesh Sippy, the director behind Sholay — widely regarded as one of Indian cinema's greatest cult classics — will travel to Nepal to participate in the Nepal International Film Festival (NIFF), marking his first-ever visit to the country.
Sippy is expected to attend the festival's opening ceremony on Chaitra 19, as confirmed by the organizing body, Nepal Film and Cultural Academy.
NIFF President KP Pathak explained the significance of bringing Sippy to the festival: "We wanted him at NIFF because his experience in filmmaking and the potential for expanding the relationship between Nepali and Indian filmmakers would give our local creators something genuinely valuable. He accepted our invitation, and we are honored to have him."
At the event, Sippy is expected to share his experiences and insights from his decades-long cinematic journey directly with Nepali filmmakers and audiences — a rare and intimate opportunity for the local industry to learn from a master of his craft.
Sippy began his directorial career with the successful Bollywood film Andaz in 1971 and has since directed more than a dozen films, with Sholay (1975) standing as his most celebrated achievement. His most recent directorial work, Shimla Mirchi, released in 2020. Beyond direction, he has also produced a wide range of films including Chandni Chowk to China, Bluffmaster, Sonali Cable, and Dam Maaro Dam.
The ninth edition of NIFF will be held in Kathmandu from Chaitra 19 to 23, screening 88 films from 40 countries alongside 10 interactive programs covering a range of topics. A five-day AI Cinema Workshop will also run during the festival period. Those wishing to participate in the workshop must submit their applications by Chaitra 11.
