Kathmandu — As public debate around the rape allegation against actor Sagar Lamsal "Bale" continues to grow, actress Keki Adhikari has added her voice to those demanding accountability, posting a pointed and heartfelt statement on social media that has resonated widely across Nepal.

Keki did not mince words. Addressing what she described as one of the deepest failings of Nepali society, she wrote: "The tragedy of our society is that the victim has to walk with their head bowed, while the criminal in many cases roams around as a hero."

Her statement cut to the heart of a pattern that many survivors and advocates have long described — a culture where public sympathy frequently flows toward the accused rather than toward those who come forward with allegations, and where speaking up carries enormous personal risk.

"Is a society where the criminal is afraid and not the victim only a dream, or can we truly build it?" she asked, turning the question back on her audience with a challenge that was as much a call to action as it was a reflection on the status quo.

Keki also directly addressed those who question why survivors take time before speaking out publicly: "Listen, it takes great courage to speak up in such a harsh society, and it takes time to gather that courage." Her words offered a rare and important defense of the timeline of disclosure — a point often used to discredit survivors who do not come forward immediately.

She closed her statement with a clear three-part demand: “Let us be a little more sensitive in how we think and write about such incidents. Let us give safety and respect to the victim. And let us bring the criminal to social boycott and before the law.”

As more voices from Nepal's film and public life speak out on this case, the conversation is shifting from the incident itself to the broader culture that shapes how allegations are received, discussed, and acted upon. Keki Adhikari's statement is a reminder that the most important question is not just what happened, but what kind of society Nepal chooses to be in response.
