Kathmandu — A quietly ambitious Nepali science fiction film is making waves before it has even screened. Mokshya, produced in Australia on a budget of approximately Rs. 15-20 lakh, has released its trailer through OSR Digital, and the response — particularly from younger audiences — has been enthusiastic, with praise focused on the film's VFX and visual ambition.

Written and directed by Suvarma Paudel, the 55-minute film ventures into post-apocalyptic science fiction woven with Hindu mythology — a combination rarely explored in Nepali cinema. The story imagines a near-destroyed future world where an immortal character named Karna, created by Meghanath, is tasked with finding the powerful gem Syamantak Mani — an artifact capable of determining the fate of humanity. As Karna travels through ruined cities and a devastated landscape, he confronts deep internal questions about duty, sacrifice, and liberation.

The film was developed by a group of young filmmakers using their own resources, with production beginning in the post-COVID period. VFX artist Ashim Shakya delivered high-quality visual effects at minimal cost, a significant technical achievement given the film's micro-budget origins.

The cast includes Saurav Paudel, Sagar Upmanyu Dhakal, Sanju KC, Rajeev Twayan, Upendra Aryal, Pujan Bhandel, Shikha Upreti, and Subas Chand, with Gaurav Kandel as producer.

Mokshya will be screened at the 23rd Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival (KIMFF) from May 27 to 31.
