Devika Bandana is a legendary figure in the Nepali music industry, celebrated as one of the most versatile and enduring playback singers of her generation. Born on December 17 in Pashupatinagar, Ilam, she rose to national prominence in the late 1980s and 1990s, eventually recording over a thousand songs across various genres, including modern pop, folk, bhajan, and film music. She is frequently associated with the "Golden Era" of Nepali cinema playback singing, having collaborated extensively with iconic music directors like Shambhujeet Baskota to deliver some of the industry's biggest hits.
Her discography is filled with timeless classics such as "Yestai Rahechha Yaha Ko Chalan," "Luki Chhipi," "Mayako Nashale," and "Paschim Pokhara." Beyond her vocal prowess, she is recognized for her significant contributions to the cultural landscape, having received prestigious national honors like the Gorkha Dakshin Bahu and the Chinnalata Geet Purashkar. She was also part of the historic ensemble of 365 artists who recorded the environmental song "Melancholy," setting a Guinness World Record.
In recent years, Devika has become a source of inspiration beyond music through her public battle with Stage 3 breast cancer. She chronicled her journey and victory over the disease in her book, Winner’s Gale (translated as Jitneko Haaso), aimed at empowering other survivors. As of 2024 and 2025, she remains active in the industry, releasing new music such as "Man Pagalo Tamrai Mayale" and festive tracks like "Aayo Hai Teej Ko Ramailo Chad," continuing to perform for both national audiences and the Nepali diaspora worldwide.
