Nalina Chitrakar is a legendary pop singer who reigned as one of the most prominent female voices in the Nepali music industry during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Born on September 10, 1973, in Kathmandu, she was a pioneer of the "pop-rock" trend in Nepal, breaking traditional barriers with her energetic style and modern fashion. Her career officially took flight with the song "Timro Adhar," and she quickly followed it with hits like "Kina Kina" and "Pani Pani," which remain iconic pop anthems today. Recognized for her technical skill and stage presence, she was twice named the country’s Best Pop Singer (in 1999 and 2005) and has served as a judge and guest performer on major platforms like Nepal Idol.
Beyond her musical talent, Nalina is known for her social activism through art. She has consistently written and performed songs aimed at fostering harmony between the Madhesi and Pahadi communities, using her platform to fight against ethnic discrimination. In addition to her singing career, she worked as a television host for Channel Nepal and acted in several popular commercials. Now based in the United States with her husband and family, she remains an influential figure in the Nepali diaspora, frequently performing at international cultural festivals and continuing to release music, such as her 2023 singles "Asan Bazarma" and "Camerama Haina."
