Suchitra Shrestha holds a pioneering place in Nepali cinema as the country's first female film director. She made her historic directorial debut with the film “Prem Yuddha”, which was released in August 2005. The movie featured prominent actors of the time, including the late Shree Krishna Shrestha and Sanchita Luitel. By breaking the long-standing gender barrier in the director's chair—a role that had been exclusively male-dominated since the inception of Nepali cinema—she paved the way for subsequent generations of female filmmakers.
Beyond her work behind the camera, Shrestha has been a significant leader in the industry's professional organizations. In 2016, she made history again by being elected as the first female president of the Film Directors Guild of Nepal (FDGN). During her tenure, she focused on advocating for the rights of directors and improving the professional standards within "Kollywood." In addition to Prem Yuddha, her filmography includes titles such as "Khai Ko Kasko." Even as more women enter the directorial field today, Shrestha is widely respected as the trailblazer who first proved that women could successfully lead large-scale commercial film productions in Nepal.
