Kathmandu — Veteran director Tulsi Ghimire's latest film Pahad held its Kathmandu Valley premiere ahead of its nationwide release on Baisakh 1, and the response from the industry's first audience has been overwhelmingly warm.
Director and actor Nir Shah was among the first to share his reaction, describing the film as a deeply Nepali experience: "Watching this film felt like watching a genuinely original Nepali film. Tulsi ji has shown the contemporary reality of Nepal in his own distinctive style. The film introduces us to many truths while showing us our hills."
Actor Bhuvan KC praised the film's broad appeal, calling it a complete family package: "The film is very well made. While watching it, you feel entertained and then suddenly you find yourself moved. It has become a complete package."
Actor Jitu Nepal spoke with visible emotion about the experience, reserving special praise for debut actress Panchami Ghimire: "While watching the film, you don't even realize when you go from happiness to tears. I've known Panchami since she was little — and now she has become a heroine and done wonderful work. Pahad has truly become a rock."
Directors Deepashree Niraula and Deepak Acharya, filmmaker Diwakar Bhattarai, and actors Ramesh Upreti and Kiran KC also praised the film for its honest portrayal of Nepal's contemporary reality.
Director Ghimire reflected on the moment with quiet satisfaction: "The hills are a beautiful place. We have portrayed the beauty and harmony of the hills alongside the reality of their emptying. This story is set in the hills, but it is a portrait of the whole country. The reaction from the first audience of fellow filmmakers has made me very excited."
Pahad stars Madankrishna Shrestha, Bipin Karki, Rabindra Singh Baniya, Sunil Thapa, Renunaath Yogi, Uma Giri, Arun Kshetri, and debut actress Panchami Ghimire, who is also the director's younger daughter. The film opens nationwide on Baisakh 1.
