Kathmandu — Action star Biraj Bhatt is back. After approximately one and a half years away from cinema screens, Bhatt has returned with Ram Naam Satya, which opened in theaters across Nepal on Friday — and the expectations could not be higher.
His last film, 12 Gaun, which he both directed and starred in, became a landmark in Nepali action cinema. Despite fierce competition from established franchise Chha Maya Chhapakkai 5, it earned nearly Rs. 20 crore at the box office, setting a record as the highest-grossing Nepali action film ever made. That extraordinary benchmark now casts a long shadow over his return, making Ram Nam Satya one of the most pressure-laden releases in recent Nepali film history.
Fortunately, the conditions for the new film's debut are favorable. With no major competitor at the box office this week, Ram Naam Satya enjoys a solo release, and theaters across the country — multiplexes and single screens alike — have allocated the film approximately 180 shows nationwide.
Directed by Michael Chand, who wrote the story and screenplay over five years, the film stars Biraj Bhatt alongside Sushil Shrestha, Divya Raymajhi, Supushpa Bhatt, Sunil Thapa, Prashant Tamrakar, Ayush Singh Thakuri, Khushi Karki, and Dinesh DC, among others. The film is produced with investment from Upendra Shahi and Sweta Bimali, with Kishore Bhatt, Rajendra Bhatt, and Arjun Sunar serving as executive producers.
With its trailer having crossed 1 million views in 24 hours, its lead song "Dhagole Bateko" sitting at over 6 million YouTube views, and strong advance booking signals, Ram Nam Satya carries the kind of pre-release momentum that only comes when a film genuinely earns it.
Whether it can match or surpass the extraordinary bar set by 12 Gaun remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Biraj Bhatt's return to the big screen has the full attention of Nepali cinema audiences.
