His journey in the film industry began when he ventured into Bollywood in the 1940s. However, upon returning to Nepal, he faced challenges in obtaining Nepali citizenship due to the title 'Bhutani' in his name.
One of his pioneering contributions was introducing the concept of action into Nepali films during a time when the industry was dominated by musicals and melodramas. His work as an action director began with the movie "Jeevan Rekha" in 1978, and he went on to work on action sequences in films like "Kanchhi," "Vishwas," and "Vijay-Parajaya." His influence in this genre laid the foundation for future action directors in Nepal, including Rajendra Khadgi.
Gopal Bhutani also had a successful acting career, appearing in hit films such as "Chino," "Deuta," and "Unko Samjhana Maa." His experience as a comic and character actor enriched his diverse career in the film industry.
